Disability Insurance Awareness Month is officially underway.

This year’s Council for Disability Awareness campaign theme is: “Income Protection Through Every Stage of Life.” In the coming weeks, we’ll be talking about the importance of income protection no matter where an individual is on their life path. It’s part of our ongoing effort to discuss disability insurance in the real life context of consumers’ overall financial security and wellness.

This week, The CDA will focus on millennials – today’s young adults. Consider the following facts about this generation:

  • Less than 20 percent of millennials have more than $5,000 in emergency savings.
  • College-educated millennials face the highest student loan burden of any generation – according to Edvisors, the average 2015 graduate faced a whopping $35,000 of debt.
  • In a recent CDA study, 40 percent of millennials said they would consider disability insurance if they knew more about it.
  • In that same study, more than a third of millennials said they couldn’t last three months without their income.

And, here’s something else to keep in mind about Americans of all ages. According to a May 2015 survey done by the Federal Reserve, almost half of Americans could not pay an emergency $400 bill today without selling something or borrowing money.

I hope that by now you’ve had a chance to look at some of the content in our special 2016 DIAM campaign toolkit. It’s packed with resources designed with one thing in mind: to help you start the income protection conversation with your clients, prospects and associates. Today we added even more great content – all about new and growing families, which is next week’s theme.

Here are some of the things you’ll find in the toolkit:

  • Factsheets to support the overall campaign and each weekly theme.
  • Information about our two new e-books
  • Eye-catching graphics that can be used on social media.
  • Our consumer guide to income protection.
  • Links to videos, stories and other useful CDA content.

We also encourage you to connect with us via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Welcome to Disability Insurance Awareness Month! We look forward to a fun and informative campaign to educate all Americans about the importance of protecting their income through disability insurance.

Warm regards,

Carol Harnett
